What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a general name given to several naturally occurring fibrous minerals that have crystallised to form fibres. Asbestos fibres do not dissolve in water or evaporate, they are resistant to heat, fire, chemical and biological degradation and are mechanically strong. Asbestos is generally divided into two sub-groups; serpentine and amphiboles. Serpentine asbestos (chrysotile or white asbestos) was the most commonly used type of asbestos. Chrysotile asbestos fibres are soft, flexible and curved and far less hazardous than the amphibole type. Amphibole fibres (crocidolite-blue asbestos, amosite-brown asbestos, tremolite, actinolite and anthophyllite) are brittle fibres and are often rod- or needle-like in appearance. It is this form that is more hazardous to health. Crocidolite was the most commonly used amphibole asbestos in the past. Uses of asbestos The properties of asbestos made it an ideal material for use in a number of products, including insulation material for buildings, boilers and pipes; car brakes and floor tiles, insulating board to protect buildings and ships against fire; asbestos cement for roofing sheets and pipes. Due to the risks to health following inhalation exposure to asbestos the importation of blue and brown asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1985. Is this asbestos?
If you suspect asbestos Here is some key, easy to follow information: Presume it is asbestos until proven otherwise. Limit access to the material if there are any signs of damage or disturbance. ​Do Not attempt to clean any suspected asbestos debris or carryout any repairs to the material, seal off the location until the facts are known. Asbestos was used in the UK in 1000s of materials up until 1999 (2000 for ease). Some were banned as early as 1985, some in 1992 but recognising this is very difficult, even to the trained eye. Most materials, if not all can only be PROVEN to contain asbestos through a proper level of analysis, there are some way to tell without the analysis, a good surveyor would tell you how, but you can never beat a lab report.  If the material is in a good condition, LEAVE IT ALONE. If the material is damaged or requires removal, WE STRONGLY ADVISE ENGAGING a reputable, professional company to deal with it. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CLEAN UP OR REMOVE ANY ASBESTOS YOURSELF, I know, we've already stated this, but it is important as you may make the situation worse!! 1-11 Compliance group Ltd do not remove asbestos, but we work with 100s of very reputable, competent and insured companies across the UK who do, we will provide you with unbiased and impartial advice on who to use if you contact us​ Be aware that any asbestos being disposed of, this includes any PPE (personal Protective Equipment) and RPE, (Respiratory Protective Equipment) used in the task, along with items used to clean up asbestos that cannot be thoroughly cleaned, such as wipes, cloths, contaminated water, etc. MUST BE disposed of as hazardous waste, no matter of quantity. DO NOT PUT HAZARDOUS (asbestos) WASTE IN DOMESTIC WASTE, THIS IS TOTALLY ILLEGAL.  If using a "self sample kit" follow the instructions to the letter. UKATA or IATP ?
Are 1-11 Compliance Group Ltd members of UKATA (United Kingdom Asbestos Training Providers). The short answer is no, we aren't, but we are members of the IATP, (Independent Asbestos Training Providers). We could of course join UKATA, or do what others do and strike up a partnership with a UKATA member and then advertise UKATA courses, but then you'd be paying more as you'd be going through a middleman. This isn't what we are about, we'd rather deal with you directly and provide you with our, high-quality, low-cost solution to training through ourselves. Plus, when you get a certificate for your training, it has our name on it, not a company you've never heard of. So what's the difference? UKATA was formed some 15 years ago following a request from the HSE (ATPWG (Asbestos Training Providers’ Working Group)) for the industry to hold a list of approved and accepted asbestos training providers as they [HSE] thought that the industry should look after itself. As with many trade bodies, the IATP was an offshoot of UKATA, it was created by a number of former UKATA directors and other industry personnel as an alternative organisation for asbestos training companies and individuals to join, after all, competition is good!!.  ​ The MD of 1-11 Compliance Group Ltd, Paul Beaumont, was actually the marketing director (non-exec) of UKATA for several years as well as being one of the approved UKATA auditors and a member of several of the organisations listed below. ​ Is one better, or more recognised than the other? ​ The short answer again... no! Both the IATP and UKATA are recognised by the HSE, trade and industry related bodies, they're just... different... but kind of the same! ​ To give an analogy of the two bodies, it would be akin to the motoring organisations, the RAC and AA, which is better, they both provide a top notch service with national coverage and they both do the right thing when needed. The choice for membership is one of a preference. Both the IATP and UKATA are equally recognised by the HSE, industry leadership groups along with other trade bodies and associations. Yes, there are some who may stipulate that a trades person "MUST BE UKATA trained", but if asked why they demand this, they tend to have no idea, maybe its something to do with the former UKATA marketing director (non-exec) (see above) being too good at his job!!) ​ The IATP and UKATA do not actually see each other as competitors, their is no rivalry. They both do what they do and they do it exceedingly well. In fact, there are several IATP members who have also joined UKATA and visa versa. The CEO of the IATP gets on very well with the UKATA managers and employees as well as the directors, he also knows many of the UKATA members personally having worked and collaborated with a good number of them for a great number of years on many projects, some even attending his wedding.   ​ So why the IATP? ​ 1-11 Compliance Group Ltd chose to join the IATP over UKATA for a number of reasons, the first, because we want to show and prove to current and future customers that we are committed to providing only the best, highest quality asbestos training, not that being a member of UKATA wouldn't demonstrate this, but there is one other reason, and its a big one. If you'd not already guessed it, the MD of 1-11 Compliance Group Ltd, Paul Beaumont, is the CEO of the IATP.  Imaging, the CEO of the RAC calling the AA if they had a car issue, it just wouldn't look right would it. ​ We chose one, not the other, we could, if desired join all of the asbestos industry acronyms, UKATA, ACAD, ARCA, BOHS, FAAM, NORAC, RoSPA, RSPH, ASG AMI, ATAC, to name but a few , but then we'd need a new webpage just to show all the logos and what would it prove? The IATP, due to its low overheads and out goings, keep the cost of membership low. It is run by its members who volunteer their time and it has has no physical office. This is by design, it was formed like this to keep its spending and need to generate cash down, as such, it doesn't need to charge much to it's members, meaning the members can keep their training costs competitive. Asbestos sampling kit
At 111 CGL we don't promote the kits for the self sampling of potential asbestos materials unless the person taking the sample has a good understanding of the potential risks involved and can take and submit the sample safely. We'd much prefer that one of our fully insured, trained and experienced surveyors take samples of suspected asbestos materials. Not only is this our preferred option, but it may be more cost effective and where timing is of essence, it is probably going to be quicker to get a result. We have a network of people based across the UK who can be called upon with very short notice. ​ WARNING - Sampling suspected asbestos materials can be potentially dangerous and expensive if done wrong.
Is self sampling quicker?
Time - From purchasing one of our kits, we have to dispatching it, this will be the same day of it purchased before 3pm. You then need to take the sample, carefully and following our fully detailed instructions, then get it to the laboratory for analysis, our kits have a tear resistant, pre-paid secure envelopes included for this, however, if you've shopped around, you will note that most asbestos sampling kit suppliers state results within 24 hours of it being received, we can get you the results to you within 24 hours* of the phone call or email. We must also add, and this is based on experience, if the sample isn't collected and packaged correctly, the lab. may refuse it, which then requires a second sample to be taken, wasting your time and your money. On average, from buying a kit to getting the results takes between 5 to 9 days, dependent on postage although a private courier can be used to speed this up at an additional cost.
Is self sampling cheaper?
Cost - Our kits start at £39.95 (plus VAT) for the basic, one sample kit, then increase in £20/£25.00 increments based on the number of samples and equipment required. We also provide kits that include respirators, coveralls, small spray bottle, hazardous waste bags, repair materials etc, some, if not most of which you probably wont need. Then what if you buy a kit, but realise you need more samples, and how are you also going to dispose of the waste items, you can't just throw them in the bin. With our attending surveyor, all of this is covered and included in the price, they will advise you on what is required. ​ To give you a comparison, we charge £80 plus mileage (plus VAT) from our Leeds office to attend to take one sample. Your location determines the final/total cost ​ Sticking with the Yorkshire location, lets say you are in Halifax, the cost of the sample would be £107.90 (plus VAT), an all in cost of £129.48**. you get the result within 24 hours*, our surveyor will also advise you at the time of attendance what needs to be done, they will ensure the sample point is left safe and will advise what to do to keep people safe until the results are known. We will also offer advice on receipt of results so you know what needs to be done. We can, and often do attend 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, again, reducing any potential delay.  ​ All you need to do is send us your location (post code) tell us what you want sampling and we will provide you with a full, inclusive price, along with the time and date of attendance. You are under no obligation to accept.
Asbestos sampling kit limitations
You will also note, when purchasing one of these kits generally, and its the same for the ones we sell, there are limitations of what materials should be sampled and what will be accepted by the lab. ​ Materials such as Decorative Textured Coating (Artex), adhesives, paints, mastic, putty, floor tiles, linoleum, asbestos cement etc, basically, the low risk materials are the ones that will be accepted. What of the higher risk materials such as insulation, asbestos insulation board, etc? YOU REALLY SHOULDN'T BE SAMPLING THESE. Our surveyors have no such limitations.
